Frequently Asked Questions
What bike do I need for coaching?
It depends on the session. A mountain bike is best for MTB coaching, while a gravel bike works well for both gravel and cyclocross — and vice versa.
It doesn’t need to be top-end, just in good working order and recently serviced.
As your skills and focus develop, you will move towards more discipline-specific bikes.
What kit should I bring?
Bring your usual riding kit, suitable for the weather and conditions on the day.
You’ll also need a helmet, water, and basic spares (tube, tools, pump). If you’re running tubeless, make sure your sealant is topped up.
Most importantly, come ready to ride and learn.
Is this coaching suitable for beginners?
Yes. Sessions are designed for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced riders looking to refine their skills.
I’ll tailor each session to suit you and what you want to get out of it.
Are these sessions suitable for experienced riders?
Yes. Many experienced riders and racers benefit from sessions focused on specific aspects of their riding — whether that’s cornering, line choice or efficiency.
Often it’s the small details that make the biggest difference (often to the detriment of my own racing results).
Where do coaching sessions take place?
Sessions run in and around London, including local trail networks and locations such as the Surrey Hills or Chilterns
I’m based in South London and can travel by train to areas near you — we’ll agree a mutually convenient location when you book.
What will I learn?
You’ll develop core off-road skills including braking, cornering, body position, climbing and descending, as well as confidence on varied terrain.
Each session is tailored to your strengths and weaknesses, so you get the most out of your time on the bike.
Can coaching help with events or racing?
Absolutely. Sessions can be tailored to prepare for gravel events, sportives and cyclocross racing, helping you ride more efficiently and with greater confidence on race day.

I recently attended one of Charlie’s coached sessions at Crystal Palace Park. I am a BC Level 2 Coach but I still learnt a lot from Charlie. His session covered a lot of ground, but it never felt overwhelming and there was always ample opportunity to practice and perfect each technique he taught. There was a broad spectrum of ability within the group but each of us came away happy and a better bike handler.
