Gravel Coaching with Charlie
Charlie is Lead Off Road Coach at Herne Hill Velodrome, and his gravel coaching draws on years of racing, event organising, and bikepacking adventures. He’s as comfortable helping riders prepare for fast one-day gravel races as he is guiding the demands of multi-day expeditions. His sessions focus on the essentials—handling loose terrain, pacing for long hours in the saddle, smart fuelling, and building the resilience gravel riding demands.
Whether your goal is to finish your first local gravel event, step up to a major challenge, or take on a bikepacking journey, Charlie brings a balance of technical know-how and real-world experience to get you there.
Gravel Coaching FAQs
Do I need a gravel bike?
A gravel bike is ideal, but not essential. A mountain bike will work just as well for most sessions.
It doesn’t need to be top-end — just in good working order and recently serviced. As your riding develops, you will move towards more discipline-specific bikes.
Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes. Sessions are designed for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced riders looking to refine their skills.
Each session is tailored to you and what you want to get out of it.
What gravel skills will I learn?
You’ll develop core gravel riding skills including cornering on loose surfaces, climbing and descending, braking, body position and riding efficiently over longer distances.
Can this help me prepare for events?
Absolutely. Sessions are ideal preparation for gravel rides and events, helping you ride more efficiently, conserve energy and stay in control on varied terrain.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions run in and around London, including local trails and routes out towards the Surrey Hills and Chilterns.
I’m based in South London and can travel by train to areas near you — we’ll agree a convenient location when you book.
What should I expect from a session?
Sessions are practical, relaxed and built around your goals. You’ll be out on real terrain, working on key skills with clear, simple feedback you can apply straight away.
Are sessions 1:1 or group-based?
Both options are available. You can book a one-to-one session for focused coaching or join a small group for a more social experience.
