Gravel Coaching with Charlie

Charlie is Lead Off Road Coach at Herne Hill Velodrome, and his gravel coaching draws on years of racing, event organising, and bikepacking adventures. He’s as comfortable helping riders prepare for fast one-day gravel races as he is guiding the demands of multi-day expeditions. His sessions focus on the essentials—handling loose terrain, pacing for long hours in the saddle, smart fuelling, and building the resilience gravel riding demands.

Whether your goal is to finish your first local gravel event, step up to a major challenge, or take on a bikepacking journey, Charlie brings a balance of technical know-how and real-world experience to get you there.

Do I need a gravel bike?

A gravel bike is ideal, but not essential. A mountain bike will work just as well for most sessions.

It doesn’t need to be top-end — just in good working order and recently serviced. As your riding develops, you will move towards more discipline-specific bikes.

What gravel skills will I learn?

Sessions run in and around London, including local trails and routes out towards the Surrey Hills and Chilterns.

I’m based in South London and can travel by train to areas near you — we’ll agree a convenient location when you book.
