Channel to Chart
Gravel/CX MTB bikes | 80 km/50 miles | 1100m/3600ft
Date: Saturday 20th September
Conquer the Downs and enjoy the views across the Channel and the Romney Marsh. Seek out the revitalized heart of Folkestone and spot the early pre-radar listening ears on the cliffs.
Don't be beguiled by the steady start from Ashford up the Stour Valley; the going gets tough after Wye as you climb to the ridge of the North Downs. The route dips and dives as it heads towards the coast, ending up on the ridge above Folkestone with magnificent views across the bay to Dungeness.
Enjoy the revitalized Folkestone harbour. The route gets a little naughty here, guiding you on the boardwalk across the shingle (it's fun to ride but be prepared to get off and walk) before stopping off in the Activ Cycles shop in Sandgate.
Follow the coast out of town towards Hythe and then jump on the Military Canal to Lympne, in Roman times a busy cross-channel port. Eyes right, try and spot the weird concrete semi-circles on the ridge, pre-radar early warning sound mirrors.
It's a tricky old climb up the Zoo run (prizes, of course, for spotting the giraffes!), after which the route heads back to the ridgeline for the final onslaught.
Highlights:
- A mix of car-free trails, bridleways, and byways seamlessly connected by quiet country lanes.
- Great views across the channel, visit Folkestone's old harbour and ride the boardwalk on the beach.
- Recharge at the generously stocked feed station at the halfway point.
- Expert mechanical assistance at the start and mid-way feed station.
