MTB/CX/Gravel Bike | Fully Guided | Challenging singletrack | 60 miles | 6 to 7 hours
This explores the Greensand Ridge, from Godstone through to Sevenoaks. Heavily wooded, this series of hills has a completely different character to their more northerly counterparts with shorter, steeper climbs and descents.
The ride starts and finishes in Crystal Palace and will take the best part of the day to complete.
Meeting at the Four Boroughs Cafe , we head out via Mitcham Common and Carshalton, gently climbing the North Downs to the lookout point atop the ridge. On a clear day, it’s possible to make out the thin line of the South Downs on the horizon.
Plunging down the escarpment the geology changes as we leave chalk behind and hit sandstone big time where we circle an enormous sandpit and climb across a sandy bridleway to meet the Greensand Ridge proper.
The complex series of tracks and bridleways wind their way eastwards, through woodland and fields for the best part of 16 miles. We’ll take a break at the Haycutter, just outside Broadham Green.
Continuing on, many roadies will recognise the hills - Crockham, Toys, Ide and Yorks – but not necessarily from the way we will approach them!
Descending the Ridge just before Sevenoaks, we make tracks for Sundridge and its infamous hill – which we do on the tarmac, phew!
