Get ready for Cyclocross - new skill sessions this Autumn

Local Bike Shops

It’s the question I'm asked most frequently. I’ve always been a supporter of the 'local bike shop' and here's a list of seven of my favorite 'go to' bike shops.

All are owned and run by cyclists, they know what’s what and you’ll be in safehand with them.

Rat Race Cycles

118 Evelina Road, Nunhead, SE15 3HL

A small shop concentrating on repairs but stocking a few accessories. What owner Pete Owen and his friendly team don’t know about maintaining bikes, isn’t worth knowing. Justly famed within the cycling community, they are always busy, so it’s worth booking ahead.

Bon Velo

Branches in Herne Hill and Norwood

Owned and run by keen cyclists Karina and John, Bon Velo is a stylish, easy going bike shop well stocked with bikes and accessories that more ordinary shops just don’t stock. All backed up by damn good mechanics who know how to fix bikes.

Herne Hill Cycles

83 Norwood Rd, SE24 9AA

Owned and run by Tamas, another excellent mechanic, Herne Hill Bicycles has a growing reputation for fast, friendly and efficient service. They offer a collect and return service, a good option for those short on time.

Call ahead to book a bike service.

Brixton Cycles

296-298 Brixton Rd SW9 6AG

Back bone of the cycling world, Brixton Cycles, a co-operative set up Tim Clifford and Tom Wells over 30 years ago, has supported the cycling world ever since.  A wonderful place to go, these guys know bikes and know them well, they stock a range of bikes, clothing and accessories and their workshop is excellent - you’re in good hands.

Look Mum No Hands

49 Old St, EC1V 9HX

OK, so not such a local ‘local’ bike shop and famous as ‘that’ achingly cool cycling café. They do a very decent coffee and far too many tempting cakes, it's even worth the visit just to salivate over the iconic cycanalia.

Pertinent to this page – their workshop run by ex pro mechanic Sam is second to none, happily, not just the preserve of the lycra clad.  Book ahead, these guys are in demand.

Parts and Labour

148 Lewisham Way, New Cross, SE14 6PD

Don’t let their published wish of becoming ‘old weathered crazy cycle hacks’ put you off, owners Ben and Tom are experienced Mountain bike and cyclocross riders who know pretty everything you will ever need to know about off-road cycling.

As with all good bike shops they get busy - book ahead.

Balfe's Bikes

Branches in East Dulwich, Islington, Streatham, Waterloo, Fulham, Reigate and Sutton.

Richard Balfe, another keen cyclist opened his first store in Dulwich back in 2008 and has since opened a further 6 stores in and around London. The repair service is spot on, can be booked on-line and they have a courtesy bike scheme to ensure you are never without a steed.
